TPO18 - Western District Line

The railway line to Warrnambool opened in 1887 and the extension to Port Fairy opened in 1890. TPO18 began service slightly before the opening of the line to Port Fairy and TPO19 commenced soon afterward. Stations served include Werribee, Colac, Warnambool and Port Fairy.

There is some evidence that by 1917, TPO18 only operated between Geelong and Warrnambool.

TPOs 18 and 19 operated along this route.

T18 - R1 (Receiver)

The TPO/18 receiver was used to receipt mail received at the mail van, for both uptrain and downtrain mails. It is seen on stamps issued in 1890.

It is a scarce strike on stamps and, to date, I have not recorded any covers.

T18- U1 (Uptrain)

The first uptrain cancel was a 26mm circle. The earliest recorded date is May 28, 1890 and the latest recorded date is March 4, 1908.

It is a common strike on stamp and on cover.

T18-U2 (Uptrain)

There is some debate whether this strike belongs here, as it may have been used for the the English Mail TPO services between Melbourne and Adelaide. The earliest recorded date is May 11, 1909 and the latest date recorded is Mar 14, 1913.

This is a very scarce cancel and I have not yet recorded any covers.

T18- D1 (Downtrain)

Only one downtrain cancel type is found for TPO18.  It is a 26mm octagon which is recorded from January 8, 1890 until November 12, 1907. The fact that no downtrains are seen after 1907 makes the TPOE type suspicious.

It is common on stamp but fairly scarce on cover, especially considering the length of service

The Early and Late Record Dates shown are those published by Purves, or otherwise confirmed to me by various TPO collectors based on inventory in their respective collections.

Rarity factors shown have been deduced from the aggregate inventory of several major collections in this field, exceeding 10,000 strikes on loose stamps and 1050 covers in total; however, the statements on relative rarity are observations only and no warranty of accuracy shall be implied.
